Michael J. Cohen: The Architect Behind AIG’s Global Expansion and the Blueprint for Modern Insurance Power

Michael J. Cohen: The Architect Behind AIG’s Global Expansion and the Blueprint for Modern Insurance Power

In an era before artificial intelligence, predictive data models, and globalized financial systems became industry standard, Michael J. Cohen was already operating at a level most executives today are still trying to understand.

A 40-year veteran of American International Group, Cohen did not just witness the rise of one of the most dominant insurance companies in history. He helped build it from the inside, shaping its political influence, global expansion strategy, and product innovation during one of the most aggressive growth periods the industry has ever seen.

Today, that same strategic mind is being applied to a new platform quietly gaining attention among institutional players: EOS, a weather-driven underwriting and risk intelligence company led by industry executive Kris Hamburger.

But Cohen’s story does not begin in a boardroom. It begins on the beaches of Normandy.

A Relationship That Changed Everything

Cohen’s entry into AIG was rooted in a deeply personal and historic connection. His father, a Navy frogman during World War II, was wounded during the D-Day invasion. The man who saved his life was a young Army Ranger named Maurice Hank Greenberg, who would later become the architect of modern AIG.

That relationship carried forward. Cohen’s father became Greenberg’s personal attorney, and years later, Cohen himself would step into AIG with a level of proximity few could access.

It was Greenberg who gave him his first directive.

“Show persistence,” Cohen recalls. “You can talk to a telephone pole. Open our government affairs office in Washington.”

At the time, AIG had no formal presence in Washington. Cohen would go on to build it from scratch.

Building Power in Washington

In 1978, Cohen founded AIG’s Washington government affairs office, placing himself at the intersection of corporate strategy, global trade, and U.S. policy.

With no established roadmap, Cohen relied on what he calls a “shoe leather strategy” — physically working Capitol Hill, building relationships across the State Department, Treasury, and key congressional offices.

The results were transformative.

He helped extend the Trade Act beyond manufacturing into services, a shift that opened new global opportunities for American companies. He also created AIG’s first political action committee and public policy forum, giving the company unprecedented access to senior lawmakers and policymakers.

These initiatives did more than elevate AIG’s influence. They redefined how corporations engaged with government at scale.

Expanding Into 138 Countries

As AIG set its sights on global dominance, Cohen became one of the key figures responsible for navigating some of the most complex international markets in the world.

At the time, many countries operated under strict protectionist policies. Insurance industries were often nationalized, and foreign companies faced heavy regulatory barriers.

Cohen’s approach was both strategic and cultural.

Rather than imposing an American model, AIG embedded itself locally. The company partnered with sovereign nations, hired local executives, and respected regional customs.

“We operated under the banner of the local country,” Cohen explains. “That’s why it was Saudi American Insurance Company, not the other way around.”

This philosophy allowed AIG to secure licenses and partnerships in markets where competitors could not gain entry.

But the expansion was not without risk.

Cohen navigated political instability, nationalization threats, and shifting regulatory environments in countries like Iran and Nigeria. His role often required direct engagement with foreign governments to protect AIG’s interests and maintain its global footprint.

Innovating Before the Industry Was Ready

While many executives focused on scaling existing products, Cohen and AIG were building entirely new ones.

From environmental liability policies to directors and officers insurance, AIG became known for creating solutions before the market fully understood the need.

“We were AI before there was AI,” Cohen says. “We studied government policy to anticipate risk and build products around it.”

This forward-thinking approach positioned AIG as a leader in innovation, but it also exposed a major challenge. The broader market was not always equipped to sell what AIG was creating.

Brokers struggled to educate clients on emerging risks, forcing AIG to not only develop products but also reshape how they were distributed.

Redefining Market Strategy

Later in his career, Cohen transitioned into senior marketing leadership, where he tackled one of AIG’s most critical growth challenges: scaling into major accounts.

His solution was a complete restructuring of the company’s distribution model.

Rather than organizing around products, Cohen introduced segmentation based on client size. Small, mid-sized, and large accounts were each served through tailored product lines and strategies.

The impact was immediate.

This model improved efficiency, increased market penetration, and was eventually adopted by brokers across the industry.

It became a blueprint for how insurance companies approach client segmentation today.

The Industry Shift: From Relationships to Data

After decades at the highest levels of the business, Cohen has witnessed a fundamental shift in how the insurance industry operates.

What was once a relationship-driven ecosystem has increasingly become data-driven, powered by artificial intelligence and predictive analytics.

While Cohen acknowledges the value of data, he is clear about its limitations.

“AI is powerful, especially in personal lines where the data is deep,” he says. “But the more complex the risk, the more you still need human experience.”

He points to specialty and exotic risks as areas where institutional knowledge and long-term relationships remain irreplaceable.

In his view, the future of the industry is not about choosing between technology and people, but balancing both.

Legacy Over Transactions

When asked what separates a successful executive from someone who builds a lasting legacy, Cohen does not hesitate.

“Relationships built on integrity and trust,” he says. “That’s everything.”

He emphasizes that real influence is not built overnight. It comes from consistently delivering value, maintaining credibility, and earning trust over time.

“Clients always say they want a quick long-term relationship,” he adds. “But that doesn’t exist. You have to prove it.”

It is a philosophy that defined his career and one that continues to shape how the most successful leaders operate today.

A Lasting Blueprint

Michael J. Cohen’s career is more than a reflection of AIG’s rise. It is a blueprint for how power is built inside global industries.

Through relationships, policy influence, product innovation, and strategic expansion, he helped create a model that continues to influence insurance, finance, and corporate strategy decades later.

And in a world increasingly driven by algorithms and automation, his core lesson remains unchanged.

The most valuable asset in business is still trust.
