The most interesting thing about Niki Metz’s work might be how difficult it is to identify.
A face appears brighter. The eyes seem more awake. The features feel newly balanced, yet there is no obvious intervention demanding attention. The person still looks like herself, perhaps even more so.
For Metz, founder of Néos Beauty Atelier, that subtle uncertainty is the goal.
“I love when my clients tell me that people ask, ‘What did you do? You look so refreshed. You look more awake. You look younger,’” Metz says. “They notice the difference, but they don’t notice the brows. To me, that’s when I know I’ve done my job.”
It is a philosophy that runs counter to a beauty culture in which results are expected to photograph clearly, announce themselves immediately, and fit whatever aesthetic is dominating the moment.
Metz is interested in something quieter.
Before entering permanent makeup, she spent years as a makeup artist studying faces. Her work favored glowing skin, natural brows, and adjustments precise enough to shift an expression without overwhelming it.
“I’ve always had a thing for eyebrows,” she says. “Even as a makeup artist, I became known for clean, glowing skin and beautiful, natural brows.”
When microblading began gaining popularity nearly a decade ago, Metz learned the technique but found its standardized approach removed from what her makeup career had taught her.
“It felt very one size fits all, almost like I was putting the same brow on every face,” she says. “Coming from makeup, where I had spent years studying different faces, that approach just didn’t make sense to me.”
The turning point arrived while working on her mother.
“I remember telling her, ‘I don’t know if I can do this. I feel like I’m stamping the same eyebrows onto everyone,’” Metz recalls.
Her mother suggested that she forget the formula and approach her brows as if she were applying makeup.
“Look at my face and make me look like me,” Metz remembers her saying.
That sentence became the foundation of her work.
Rather than beginning with a predetermined shape, permanent makeup artist Niki Metz begins with the person in front of her. She studies bone structure, existing hair, facial movement, expression, and personality before deciding what should be added and what should remain untouched.
A consultation at Néos begins with conversation. Metz watches how a client’s face moves when she speaks, how one eyebrow might naturally lift higher than the other, and what happens around the eyes when the person becomes animated.
“When a client first sits in my chair, I like to get to know them before I really start looking at their brows,” she says. “I’ll warm up the conversation and just watch them.”
The details Metz notices are not flaws to be systematically corrected. They are part of the face’s identity.
“I’m not looking at what I can change just for the sake of changing it,” she says. “I’m looking at what I want to keep and where I can make these tiny adjustments.”
The brow is never treated as an isolated object. It exists in conversation with the eyes, cheekbones, forehead, and movement of the face.
“It’s still them,” Metz says. “Just a little more polished.”
Her approach also leaves room for time.
Permanent makeup occupies an uneasy position within an industry powered by constant change. A beauty trend can disappear within months, while pigment placed into the skin can remain for years. Metz responds with a deliberately light hand.
“Does that mean my work might not last as long as someone who goes much deeper or heavier? Maybe,” she says. “But to me, that’s actually a good thing.”
Some clients have been visiting Metz for eight or nine years. Their brows have evolved alongside their faces, preferences, and the larger beauty landscape.
“A trend is still a trend, even if you’re putting it on someone’s face permanently,” she says. “So I’m always thinking, how do I make this feel current, but still effortless and classic?”
Technique, in Metz’s view, is only part of the equation.
Permanent makeup now comes with an expanding vocabulary of microblading, nano brows, powder brows, and combination techniques. Metz believes clients can become so focused on choosing a procedure that they overlook the artist interpreting their face.
“I don’t think it’s about which technique is better,” she says. “It’s about the artist, their hand, their vision, and how they see the client.”
That distinction also shapes how Metz trains other artists. Rather than building large classes around a repeatable procedure, she created an intimate apprenticeship intended to develop aesthetic judgment.
“I can teach someone how to create a beautiful stroke, but most importantly, I want them to develop an artistic eye,” she says. “Technique can be taught, but artistry is knowing what to do with it.”
The next evolution of Néos expands that thinking beyond brows.
When Metz founded the atelier nearly nine years ago, she chose its name with intention. In Greek, néos means new, young, or fresh. For Metz, who is Greek American, the word captured the sensibility she wanted the space to embody.
Freshness remains the connecting idea, but Néos is now moving further into advanced, results-driven skin treatments.
“I’ve always believed the best makeup begins with healthy, glowing skin,” Metz says. “It really brings everything together. Brows, makeup, and skin, each complementing the other and creating the complete vision I’ve always had for Néos.”
Metz expects the next era of permanent makeup to become softer, more refined, and less dependent on techniques packaged as passing movements.
“Whether it’s brows, lip blushing, or eyeliner, the best work will be the work you almost don’t notice,” she says.
Faces change. Personal style shifts. Trends disappear almost as quickly as they arrive. Metz’s work accounts for all of it.
The ultimate compliment is not someone immediately recognizing that a client has had her brows done. It is the quiet suspicion that something has changed, even if no one can say exactly what.
For Metz, beauty is most compelling when it leaves a little mystery behind.
